During my trip to Ooty, Inida. I visited Gene Pool Eco Tourism Center, there is a aquarium with local and exotic fishes, i met again this beautiful fish in there, Before that i seen this fish many times in my village and in the rivers which i go for fishing, even i caught this fish many times, we locally call it ‘poovalan paral’ ( flower tale ‘paral’). This fish has many names including Miss Kerala, ചെങ്കണിയാന് (Malayalam Language Name) , Rotstrich-Algenfresser & etc.., This fish is only seen in the fresh water rivers and pools in south india, especially in Kerala, Karanataka & Tamil Nadu. This is a common fish here in the rivers and streams in my home town Valanchery , Malappuram – Kerala. But the IUCN marked this species as ‘Endangered’ Category. May be it because of the water pollution and rapidly changing climate conditions here in Kerala and south India, in my point of view, we have to protect our rivers and nature to save this beautiful species.
